Hydrogeology - Do you need a hydrogeologist?
Hydrogeologists study and work with groundwater, the underground portion of the hydrological cycle and the largest store of liquid fresh water in the world.
I have worked as a hydrogeologist for more than 40 years, with the British Geological Survey, in academia and as a consultant, practising, researching, teaching and communicating about groundwater in Britain and overseas.
I have directed and taught on an MSc course in Hydrogeology, organised professional training courses, written books, scientific papers and popular articles, and contributed to radio and TV programmes such as Science Now, Today, World Tonight, and Countryfile.
I am the author of Introducing groundwater, the book that has introduced many non-specialists and undergraduate students to hydrogeology.
My enthusiasm for communicating and for improving public understanding of science means that I aim to simplify rather than complicate matters and ensure that clients are well-informed about technical work.
